At DRIVESHARE, we love sharing the passion and stories behind the cars in our global community. This week, we’re heading to Rovellasca, Italy, to meet Samuele and his iconic 2002 Mazda MX-5 which is available to rent on BookAclassic.com. It’s a car that proves you don’t need to be a traditional classic to be special—this MX-5 is all about style, performance, and connection to the car community.
How did you come to own your Mazda MX-5?
I bought the car from an older gentleman in Germany who could no longer drive it. He had travelled a lot with it but eventually decided to part ways with it. I purchased it through an MX-5 reseller, who promised to restore it before passing it on to me.
What drew you to this specific car?
The Mazda MX-5 is an iconic '90s roadster, but the 2002 version is improved in many ways, from the engine to the electrics. I was also drawn to how easy it is to work on the car and modify it. It’s a convertible, which adds to the fun factor, and I’ve been able to connect with various communities, all united by their passion for keeping these cars alive.
Have you made any modifications or upgrades to the car?
Yes, I’ve done several upgrades. I’ve improved the cooling system with a bigger radiator, silicone tubes, and an upgraded thermostat. I rebuilt the differential and lightened the flywheel, installed an aftermarket clutch, and added coilovers. I also upgraded the tires to semi-slicks and installed air conditioning, which makes it more comfortable during those hot summer drives.
What are some of your most memorable experiences with the car?
One of my best memories is a road trip I took through the Swiss Alps. I drove for 10 hours, passing through five mountain passes, including the Gotthard and Furka passes. That trip truly tested the car, and it performed perfectly.
Have you done any major repairs or restorations?
Yes, I’ve had to do quite a few repairs. I rebuilt and strengthened the differential, replaced the clutch, fixed some dents, changed the windshield, and dealt with rust under the headlight that was causing electrical issues. I’ve done a lot to bring the car back to its best condition.
How do you store and maintain your car?
I store the car in a private garage. I handle most of the maintenance myself, especially for jobs that don’t require a car lift. For larger tasks like clutch jobs, I work with a close friend.
Do you plan on passing this car down to future generations?
I plan to keep the car as long as possible, but since I’m still under 30, I haven’t thought much about passing it down yet.
Where has your Mazda MX-5 taken you?
This car has taken me everywhere! Last summer, I took it by ferry to Sardinia, then up the mountains to central Switzerland for a mountain stay. I’ve also driven it multiple times around Lake Como, and I plan to travel all across Italy with it.
