At DRIVESHARE, we love sharing the unique stories behind the classic cars on our platform. This week, we feature Bonnie Wayland from Phoenix, Arizona, owner of Dreamy Dubs Weddings + Events, and her gorgeous 1973 VW Super Beetle, affectionately known as 'Lucy'.

Can you tell us about the history of your 1973 VW Super Beetle?

I acquired Lucy in 2019 after spotting her on Facebook Marketplace. I bought her from a young local who didn't have much history on the car. However, she did come with a booklet documenting a full restoration back in 2015. Originally red and in rough shape, the previous owner spent about a year bringing her back to life.

How did you come to own Lucy?

The Volkswagen Beetle has always been my dream car, ever since I first saw photos of my grandfather’s 1959 VW Beetle. His stories about that little car—like driving from Florida to Delaware, putting jet fuel in it, and fitting a week’s worth of groceries in the trunk—ignited my passion. After moving to Arizona, it took me just six months to find my own Beetle, and her Olympic Blue color immediately caught my eye.

What makes your VW Beetle special?

One of my most cherished memories with Lucy was the day I got to drive my grandfather around in her before he passed away in November 2023. As soon as he sat in the passenger seat, a huge smile spread across his face, and it stayed there the entire ride. It was a full-circle moment for me, as his stories about his own 1959 Beetle are what first sparked my love for these cars. Sharing that passion with him, knowing he was the reason it began, was an experience I'll treasure forever.

Another highlight with Lucy came about three years ago when I had the opportunity to chauffeur people at the Barrett-Jackson Auction. I drove attendees to and from the entrance, and the reaction was always the same—pure joy. The car drew instant smiles, and seeing people so excited to take a ride made every moment behind the wheel incredibly rewarding. It was a reminder of the simple yet profound joy that a classic car like this can bring to people of all ages. Best of all was having Lucy as my getaway car at my own wedding. After the ceremony, I drove her with my family following behind to our reception location. It was a perfect way to start the next chapter of my life, with Lucy leading the way.

What kind of work has been done on Lucy?

Since owning this car, I haven't had to deal with any major repairs, but I did have the transmission rebuilt to ensure she runs smoothly. Aside from that, it's mostly been minor maintenance work. I keep her stored in my garage, and I handle all the upkeep myself.

Do you have any plans for Lucy's future?

While I don't have children or plans to pass this car down, I would love to ensure she stays in a Volkswagen-loving household when that time comes.

Thanks for sharing your story, Bonnie. Lucy, the 1973 VW Super Beetle, is more than just a car—she’s a part of Bonnie’s family history and a great example of the joy that classic cars can bring.
